What is EL-Wire? EL Wire (electroluminescent wire) is a cool running, flexible, lightweight, low power light source. The wire itself has a copper core coated with phosphor and plastic. Around that plastic coated core are two ultra thin wires, and the whole assembly is encased in clear or colored plastic to give it color. EL Wire runs on an AC current at 400-4000hz, so you must attach it to an inverter or sequencer to make it light up. Inverters and sequencers run on 1.5-12 volts DC, so you can get one small enough to fit in the smallest space, or one large enough to light your entire car or business sign. There are a large variety of options available in EL Wire, inverters, and sequencers, so you can use EL Wire nearly anywhere. Some EL Wire colors look the same when they are not lit, but when you supply them power they glow properly. Attach your EL Wire to an inverter to check the color. EL Wire is completely waterproof if your connections are sealed properly with heatshrink and sealant. All El Wire inverters and sequencers emit a noise when they are on. This is a high pitched whine, near the edge of what most people can hear. This doesn't mean you can't hear it. Place your inverters and sequencers accordingly. For clothing, we recommend a pocket. For indoor projects, place your inverter behind a solid object to reduce or eliminate the sound. On costumes, this is typically not such a problem since the wire is bending over a long radius. It becomes trouble when EL Wire is wrapped tightly around a flexible object, such as a fiberglass bike flag pole. The continuous motion coupled with the tight windings breaks down the phosphor core in the wire. Other ways to destroy EL Wire include very sharp bends, chafing on sharp corners of other objects, and stretching. EL Wire is tough, but it cannot withstand everything...
